83 years ago this week, 2 gangs were locked in a heated power struggle over control of Chicago’s illegal alcohol industry. Dion O’Banion, leader of the mostly Irish “North-side Gang” had just been murdered and Moran had taken control. He countered back, and tried to kill the head of the “South-side Gang”, Johnny Torrio, all but debilitating the gang leader. Torrio quickly […]

Brian attempts to recount his very entertaining weekend to his fellow Podwits, only to incur the wrath of J. (JJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJ!!!) and the discombobulation of Dion. Chaos ensues… the fun kind! Also, the Podwits have at a controversial recommendation by the American Library Association (damn librarians…). Yes, it’s another barely controllable episode of THE PODWITS!
Knowledge Is Power (A review of the Big Finish Doctor Who audio play The Renaissance Man )

In January, Big Finish Productions kicked off its long-awaited series of Fourth Doctor Adventures with Destination: Nerva, a flawed but listenable audio drama that overcame its shortcomings through the novelty and excitement of hearing Tom Baker and Louise Jameson back in the Doctor Who saddle. In light of that admittedly underwhelming debut, I feared its […]

While that new Superman looks ridiculous so far, albeit I’ve only seen still photos, the newest incarnation of Spider-Man looks… wait for it… AMAZING!
Even More Creamy Goodness…

Also in this week’s podcast, Dion and Brian could not think of the documentary about Thelonious Monk. It is called Thelonious Monk: Straight, No Chaser, was produced by Clint Eastwood, and released in 1988. It comes highly recommended by the Podwits and is definitely worth the price of admission.
In this week’s podcast, I mentioned the new picture of Henry Cavill as Superman and just how much the image made me want to retch. What do you think? Also, as we mentioned, here is a link to that wonderful brand of ice cream that Dion and I were raving about. Three Twins Ice […]

In this week’s podcast, J. and Dion give tons of free lip service to a damned fine brand of ice cream, Brian decides to play the part of Godot, J. dips into the reader mailbag once again and the boys nearly break their backs picking up all the names being dropped. Hilarity abounds on another […]
William Friedkin’s “Cruising” Revisited
Posted: 4th February 2012 by Dion in Film, Film ReviewTags: Al Pacino, Cruising, Randy Jurgensen, William Friedkin
On the eve of interviewing retired NYPD and film legend Randy Jurgensen (PLUG for an upcoming Podwits EXCLUSIVE), my fiancée and I sat down and revisited a cult classic, William Friedkin’s Cruising. I have to say, the film gets better with every viewing.

Donald Cortez “Don” Cornelius, the larger-than-life creator, producer and host of the iconic television show Soul Train, passed away from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 75. Cornelius started the long running show in 1970 on local television in Chicago, and pulled strings to get performers like B.B. King and Curtis Mayfield on, before […]
